Vancouver, Canada is one of the best places in the world in which to live, according to a 1999 global survey of cities. 

William M. Mercer, an international human resources consultancy, annually evaluates the world's leading cities, analyzing 39 quality-of-living factors to determine global rankings.

The Swiss cities of Zurich and Bern and the Austrian capital, Vienna, all tied with Vancouver for top spot.    Toronto was tied for 15th spot with Dusseldorf, San Francisco, Oslo, Perth, and Brussels.

The ratings are used by multinational companies to work out compensation for staff being relocated around the world.  Cities were rated on factors such as political stability, personal safety, health care, crime levels, water quality, transportation, traffic congestion, education and the availability of public services.

Vancouver, the best city in the Americas

In a similar vein, the Geneva-based Corporate Resources Group compares more that one hundred major international cities in their annual 'quality of life' survey. Rankings are compiled by using 42 factors covering political and economic stability, crime, pollution, health, environment, education, infrastructure and leisure facilities.

In 2004, Condé Nast Traveler magazine voted Vancouver the "Best City in the Americas" at its annual Readers' Choice Awards ceremony held in New York. Vancouver won the top spot over Victoria and Quebec City.

Vancouver has received similar endorsements from many other sources in the past from magazine surveys by Atlantic Monthly, Conde Nast Traveller, Maclean's, and The Economist.

Vancouver is located in one of the world's most beautiful settings, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and majestic mountains.  Although Vancouver enjoys mild winters, world-class ski resorts are very nearby.

Vancouver also happens to be situated in one of the best countries in the world.  For the sixth year in a row, Canada ranks first among 175 countries in the United Nation's quality of life survey.

Vancouver English Centre encourages English language students from all over the world to enjoy a cultural immersion experience in Canada.  Although we normally have students from up to 30 different countries, we constantly try to improve the diversity of our student body.  Thus, we frequently offer scholarships to students from specific countries.
